Time with my HSM band

Podcast No Comments »

This past week we had a meeting with all our High School band students.  Something simple we did in spending time with them was just have them answer these questions privately by themselves somewhere in the office.  This was to get a gage on where they were with their walk and so on.   Also before they could come back to our meeting place I had them memorize our Student Ministries Mission/Purpose statement.

THE QUESTIONS

Name:

1 Where are you in your walk with Christ? Explain Why?

2 Where have you spiritually grown in the past year?

3 Do I know the mission statement of HSM?

4 In a month how many times do I attend an HSM service? ________

5 If you haven’t been attending tell us why?

6 If you have been attending have you been participating by inviting friends, worshiping, engaging in the message, and or serving?

7 Who is my small group leader and how many times do I go in a month?

8 What I have I learn in small group?

9 How is my daily time with God?

10 Have I told anyone about Jesus or invited them to church this month?

11 Do I worship when I am not practicing and not playing or do I only worship when I am playing?

OUR MISSION Statement: Our ministry exits to REACH non-believing students, CONNECT them to other Christians, to help them Grow in there faith, to challenge the growing to DISCOVER their ministry, and HONOR God with their life.

I told our students that we wouldn’t anyone let look at these and that it was for our eyes only.  This was a great way to have conversations with some of students who were struggling or just had questions.  Its a great way also to help them grow, pray for them, and encourage them in certain areas  Because this ministry is more than just music, but its Youth Ministry.

What Kinds of questions do you ask your students?

HSM – This weekend we had a guest speaker, so our Student Ministries Staff band filled in. Our band is called 3WGAAA (3 White Guys and an Asian). Yup, I am the Asian. I play drums when we play every 6 months. Note though, that I am only okay at the drums. I jokingly say that I shouldn’t play 2 weeks in a row because I use the same rhythm, beats, and patterns that I play on the drums would be played exactly the same but for different songs, so really I am not joking. Anyways here are the songs we played this past weekend:

Opener – California – Phantom Planet
O Praise Him – David Crowder
Cannons – Phil Wickham
Divine Romance – Phil Wickham
Better is One Day

WILDSIDE – I was excited about this past weekend in Wildside because usually we put an adult on stage with them to lead, but every once in a while we only use junior high students to lead and they did awesome!!!

The Time Has Come – Hillsong United
Tell the World – Hillsoong United
Stir In Me – Todd Proctor
Yes You Have – Leeland

David and I are getting to another podcast so please if you have any question we will do our best to answer them.

Live Recording Track

Podcast 2 Comments »

Alright…I think this should work.

Just to let you know where this came from…This was a couple weeks ago at our college ministry service on a Thursday night. We actually aren’t set up to record anything, but every so often we plug the sound board feed into a mac and record the live mix straight into Garage Band.

Typically the recording’s aren’t very good as you mostly just hear things that are cranked in the house (kick drum, vocals, acoustic guitar)…and not so much of the amp instruments (electric guitar and bass guitar)

But surprisingly, this one came out pretty cool. Definitely a great song that I know a lot of churches are using right now.

Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone

regardless of how a recording turns out, listening to yourself is definitely one of the best ways to get better…

Simple questions:

Do you go to any music conferences?

Whether secular or Christian?

And would you recommend them and why?  Do you know the website?

I want to apologize because I said in Podcast #2 that we would go on location to show you what we do at our Praise and Worship nights for our students, but in getting ready for Easter services, I totally forgot to contact my student, who does our videos for us and so it was too late.Anyways, each month we do a Praise and Worship night for our students, in which we combine our junior high and high school students, and it is called FUEL. It’s on a random night at a random time. Its low key and intimate and we don’t promote it to get a ton of students. It not really an outreach event, but geared toward the believing student. It’s an extended time of worshiping God with our gifts. Some major expressions of worship on these nights is through an extended time of music (nearly 10-12) song, painting, drawing, journaling, praying, reading, communion, and so on. However, my team and I thought it would be interesting if he came up with a theme for our last Fuel, and we decided on “Encouragement”. To be honest it’s easy to think about it and talk about, but instead, at Fuel we gave our students an opportunity to encourage someone. Here is how the night went and I am going to break it down in how it flowed, and please know that this was not a high programmed night:

WELCOME from Taffy

Band

1. Did you feel the mountains tremble – Delirious

2. To the ends of the earth – Hillsong United

3. In Christ alone – Keith Getty & Stuart Townend

Then David and I read and explained a little of how Paul wrote in Ephesians 1, Philippians 1 and part of chapter 2, and part of Colossians 1. Specifically, I read where Paul expressed joy and delight in those who were spreading the gospel. Well, that was the challenge for the night, that our students would do the same as Paul did and encourage those friends, mentors, small group leaders, staff, and so on in the faith.

And we did that by:

A) Setting up 2 tables that had 6 computers (Laptops), connected to the internet, to write their friends and encourage them through MySpace, Emails, Blogs, Facebook comments, or however they communicate to their friends. I told them not to just to comment on how cute they were in a picture or something like that, but to be specific, like Paul did and write something encouraging to them about being strong in the Faith or about spreading the good news.

B) We had another table set up so students could do the same thing, but write it out on thank you cards, or post cards you could draw or paint on.

C) During the service you could go and pray with one of your friends during the service.

4. Hosanna – Hillsong United

5. The Stand – Hillsong United

Then I came back up and had everyone stop what they were doing, to stop and pray for those friends in the faith

8. A life of love – ?

9. From the inside out – Hillsong United

An Article from David “The Sheep” Hughes

Podcast No Comments »

This is a great article to share with your student bands to get them thinking on why we get to lead worship.  If you are looking to share something with your students or your peers, this is a great article to print for your team.  We do this a lot with our bands and teams.  We have them read the article, discuss and pull out what they think, then apply and grow as a band.  There are many times we may disagree with an article and discuss why it makes no sense or is dumb.

Again if you know of good article online please put the link on the comment page to share.
